Beliefs, Core Values, & Staff

·      We believe in one God. We believe in God who is eternally existent in three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit- each of whom possesses equally all the attributes of deity.

·      We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal second person of the Trinity, who was begotten by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, and is fully God, but became fully man to save a lost world. We believe that he was crucified and three days later rose from the grave. He ascended into heaven, and will one day return again.

·      We believe that the Holy Spirit is the eternal third person of the Trinity, who permanently indwells every believer upon his or her faith in Jesus Christ.

·      We believe the entire Bible is the inspired Word of God and that men were moved by the Holy Spirit to write the very words of Scripture. Therefore, we believe the Bible is without error, and is the final authority of faith and practice.

·      We believe that mankind was created in the image of God to have fellowship with Him but became alienated in that relationship through sinful disobedience. As a result, man is incapable of a right relationship with God through his own efforts.

·      We believe the blood of Jesus Christ, shed on the cross, provides the sole basis for the forgiveness of sin. Therefore, salvation occurs when people place their faith in the death and resurrection of Christ as sufficient payment for their sin.

·      We believe the church is the body of Christ, of which Jesus Christ is the head. The members of the church are those who have trusted by faith the finished work of Christ. The purpose of the church is to glorify God by loving God and making Him known to a lost world.

Petra’s Discipleship Process

It is our goal as a church to follow the Lord’s command to make disciples. We believe that discipleship is a process and not a program. We have tried to identify from the Bible four characteristics of a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ and have made them our process for discipleship. No matter how old or how young you are these four characteristics must be evident in a disciple’s life. We encourage every member to be actively pursuing these four characteristics.

1.     Connect

A.   Connect with God through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Every disciple must first be a worshiper at heart.

B.    Connect with other Christians through fellowship. Every Christian needs other Christians to encourage and walk with through this life.

2.     Grow

A disciple must grow in their relationship with God through Bible study and prayer. A disciple must be a part of a Bible Fellowship group and they must commit themselves to the study God’s Word daily.

3.     Serve

God has commanded and gifted His disciples to serve. A disciple must discover their spiritual gift and exercise it to edify other believers in Jesus Christ. Every disciple must be involved in serving in a ministry of the church.

4.     Reach

God has commanded every disciple to share the good news of Jesus Christ in their sphere of influence. A disciple is one who actively prays, invites and shares with others the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Pastor: Ted Owens

Hello my name is Ted Owens and I am the founding pastor of Petra Baptist Church. I received Jesus Christ into my heart at an early age and have surrendered my complete life to Him. The greatest blessing God has given me is my wife Erin. Erin and I married on May 13th of 2000 and God has blessed us with a happy home. In our home most of the joy and laughter comes from our three children. Tucker is our oldest son and two years behind him is Tanner who is our middle son and just recently the princess of the family was born whose name is Courtney. God called me into the ministry in 2002 and I received a master’s degree from Liberty Theological Seminary. In 2006 God put in on my heart to plant Petra Baptist Church in the 210 corridor area and Petra Baptist constituted membership in November of 2007. God has given me a passion to preach the Bible in a practical manner and a love to disciple people and a burden to see lost people come to know Jesus Christ.

Youth & Worship Pastor: Josh Ness

My name is Josh Ness and I am the Youth and Worship Pastor at Petra Baptist Church. I grew up in a Christian home and came to know the Lord at an early age. After serving in many leadership roles in my high school youth group I felt the Lord calling me into the ministry, but ignored the call until my freshman year of college. After lots of prayer and counsel I accepted the Lords call into full-time Christian ministry and moved to Louisville, Kentucky to attend Boyce College (a part of Southern Seminary). After two years in Louisville serving in a church and going to school God called me back to Jacksonville to partner with Petra Baptist Church. I continue to seek after God to glorify Him in all aspects of my life.
